GWONG TAU ZAI TABLE LAMP(WHITE VER.)

LEGO LIANG

It’s a lamp that was designed entirely to my personal preference, and it feels almost close to ‘white on white’.

In 1918, the Soviet geometric abstract painter Kazimir Severinovich Malevich painted a series of works on white backgrounds, the most impressive of which is the ‘White on White’, an iconic work that completely abandons the element of colour, with the colour white becoming the embodiment of light.

When he exhibited his White series in Moscow in 1919, he stated that “White is not a manifestation of nihilism, as some people think, but it is the highest joy of painting”.

Like Malevich’s desire to create works superior to those of his contemporaries, all contemporary notions about space, objects, and the laws of the universe seem to become meaningless.
What white is to GWONG TAU ZAI Table Lamp, in Liang He LEGO’s mind, is also some kind of final state of liberation or something like that, which is close to a perfect existence.

What is light? Physically regarded as the only substance with wave-particle duality, LEGO once heard the answer that light is what you see when you see the folds, and for him it was one of the few moments of epiphany in one’s life, and to this day, that feeling is still fresh in his mind.

The ultimate embodiment of light for human vision lies precisely in the fact that it explains both the folds and the word white, giving the lamp a rare poetic and Zen-like quality.

Under the warm yellow light, as the light shines on the sculpture itself, presenting shades of shadows, and while the shadows give the feeling of infinity, the white colour is what makes this feeling more fully embodied.

It is the only light in a crowd of skinhead art sculptures, presenting an artistic yet bright effect.

The Art Table Lamp conceals many small details of the design, and a closer look reveals that the small letters printed on the underside of the lamp base are the most obvious handwritten text markings of Baldboy.

The upper lampshade and the lower lamp base selected frosted texture, the middle of the five short body, hands and toes incomplete bald boy is smooth white, giving people a kind of naked shock.

In the darkness, fingertips touch the on/off button below the lamp base to light up this lamp; what’s even more wonderful is that when you press the button for a long time, the light brightly changes between the pure white and shadows alternately fill up the whole space.

This small table lamp not only has the daily functions required of a lamp, but also carries the artist’s deep thoughts and humour, between the small and trivial, so that the art in the white box (gallery), into the ordinary home.

Substance, after all, is only a shell, white on white, is the exploration of the boundaries of thought, white, hiding everything.

The lamp has been selected for 2023 Design Shanghai’s 10th Anniversary Special Programme, New Product Launch showcace.
